Hi, I just purchased a Carnivore 2 to combine with my beautiful National FS 4700.

Unfortunately my CF card doesn't seem to be recognized, after the reboot by selecting the first option I would expect to enter MSX DOS but instead it goes to MSX Basic, I think the reason is the lack of recognition of the CF.

Here is the video where I present the problem

https://youtu.be/0xWKP6pN-v0

Below I show how I created the CF (in reality it is a microSD with a CF converter but I think it changes little)

The SD has been partitioned at 2GB (the card is actually 32GB) and the partition is formatted in VFAT

/dev/mmcblk0p1 vfat 1.9G 302M 1.6G 16% /media/ozzy/MSX

Can anyone tell me where I'm wrong or if my carnivore 2 is broken?

Hello, the card must be formatted FAT16, and see if compatible here https://sysadminmosaic.ru/en/msx/carnivore2/qvl_list

if FAT16 and compatible it should start.

In the video I also see some strange characters in Basic that shouldn't be there anyway. Check if Autoexec.BAT is not the one launching something in Basic

HI

thanks for the help and yes... I formatted in fat16 and correctly copied all the files provided including autoexec.bat, so I'm stumbling in the dark, now I have ordered a CF card present in the carnivore compatibility list, if this also fails me I just don't know what to do

You have to do the partition and formatting of the SD from MSX Basic with the FDISK and FORMAT calls, then put it on the PC and copy the files

Well, I'm starting to suspect that my carnivore 2 is faulty, I took a cf which is exactly one of those reported in the compatibility list, I did everything as per the manual, formatted in fat16 (from a windows xp pc) and put the files and ...with this I get random results.

In practice, when I get to the carnivore screen, by selecting the first item, MSX restarts, then I get variable results, sometimes MSX Basic starts, sometimes Nextor.

I noticed that if the MSX has been turned off for a long time it is much more likely that Nextor will start (as it should according to the manual) but I don't understand this behaviour. The fact is that if there is a problem it's definitely not the CF because if it starts once it means it's done correctly.

Another strange thing, if I copy a file on the carnivore with cman40, this appears on the menu... and if I start it I start playing for 10/15 minutes after which everything freezes and when I restart the machine it's as if the carnivore is no longer recognized .

In my opinion I have a problem with the Carnivore or the MSX, I should compare the behavior with another machine.

@ozzyboshi Hi, as I wrote above, the CF formatting must be done from MSX and not from winXp. If MSX works well, i.e. it passes the RAM tests (RAMTEST application) and the games run, and the screen has no spurious characters, MSX works. If the C2 also boots in the O and C configuration menu the C2 works. Instead, check the cleanliness of the combs and the C2 board. And format the card from MSX.

HERE is a complete tutorial

@ozzyboshi Hi, I formatted it directly from the PC and it didn't give me any problems. I would try testing the Carnivore on another MSX.
