Hi everyone, I'm new, just registered...and I'm also new to the msx world...which fascinates me a lot, I just got a philips 8220 msx2 and I wanted to know a bit of info in general and especially if it's an expandable machine with RAM or if there are also expansions for the z 80 for this machine or something else thanks let me know hello everyone
Hi Lorenzo, welcome to this forum! There is a simple tweak to expand the RAM from 64K to 128K. This MSX also has MSX Designer built into the ROM, every time you start your computer you need to press ESC key to start MSX BASIC.
It mostly just removes the ROM, then boots directly into BASIC. On the site of the Dutch Hans Oranje there is a scheme for expanding the RAM to 128K. It's in Dutch but you can quickly translate it with Google Translate. See here: NMS8220 to 128K main RAM
For the Z80 I don't know of any changes. Maybe 7 MHz, but it's not that common, there's less room on this computer for that. In the past there was also the possibility of adding FM PAC, but the FM PAC audio chip is obsolete and with a Carnivore2 or GR8NEt cartridge you also have FM PAC.
The combination of this computer and a Carnivore2 makes it a very nice computer to have, less desk space and you don't need to expand the main RAM to 128K, because the Carnivore already has 1024KB of RAM.
This was my first MSX computer I ever had, back in 1988, so I know this computer very well. Is cute.
